Sanjay S. Rao Set To Succeed Gunjan Shah As CEO & MD Of Bata India

Bata India Limited has appointed Sanjay S. Rao as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director (CEO & MD), effective October 1, 2026, subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals.

Rao will join the company as Whole-Time Director and CEO on August 24, 2026, and serve in that role until September 30, 2026. He will then take over as CEO & MD for a five-year term ending August 23, 2031. He will succeed Gunjan Shah, whose five-year term will conclude on September 30, 2026.

Sanjay S. Rao is a retail industry executive with experience across India, South Asia, China, and Europe. Before joining Bata India, he served as Senior Director at Nike, where he oversaw retail operations across France and the Benelux markets. Earlier, he held leadership positions at Inditex and played a key role in establishing Zara’s presence in India through its joint venture with the Tata Group. He also served as Country Director for Guess in France. With more than two decades of experience in retail and consumer businesses, Rao has worked across international markets in areas including retail operations, market expansion, and business development. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from INSEAD.

Before joining Bata India, Gunjan Shah served as Chief Commercial Officer at Britannia Industries Ltd. He began his career with Asian Paints and later worked with Motorola before joining Britannia in 2007. He had joined Bata India as President in July 2021 and later assumed the role of CEO & MD. He has experience across consumer durables, telecommunications, and FMCG sectors. His professional experience includes sales, marketing, commercial operations, and business management across consumer-focused industries. Shah holds a degree in Technology from the University of Mumbai.
