Board Stewardship Huddle Celebration Draws Leading Boardroom Voices For An Evening Of Insight & Networking

Mumbai witnessed the coming together of some of the country’s leading board members, governance professionals, and business leaders as Board Stewardship hosted its inaugural Mumbai Huddle Celebration at Sorena, Bandra, on June 5th, 2026. The exclusive gathering combined thought leadership, governance discussions and professional networking, creating a platform for meaningful conversations on the future of Board leadership and corporate stewardship.

The evening commenced with a welcome address by Vikesh Wallia, Managing Director & Editor, Board Stewardship, who reflected on the platform’s remarkable journey and its growing international presence. “What began as a small knowledge-sharing initiative two and a half years ago has evolved into a truly global stewardship movement. From India to Singapore, Dubai, London, and beyond, Board Stewardship has created a trusted platform where leaders come together to exchange ideas, strengthen governance, and build lasting relationships. Our growing international presence, global partnerships, and recognition of our members on prestigious global platforms reaffirm that stewardship is a universal value.”

Among the key takeaways from the evening was the growing importance of specialised expertise in the boardroom. Speaking on this shift, Purvi Sheth, Managing Director, Shilputsi Consultants, noted, “Corporate boards are increasingly moving away from the era of ‘know-it-all’ directors. Today, companies are seeking board members with deep domain expertise, strong judgement, and the credibility to provide strategic direction. The future of board leadership will belong to individuals who combine specialised knowledge with the ability to contribute to long-term enterprise strategy.”

Highlighting the importance of continuous learning and peer engagement, Professor Sunder Ram Korivi, Adjunct Faculty, IICA, Founding Dean and SEBI SSIR Chair, observed, “Directorship, being a leadership position, requires a higher level of experiential learning. Interchange of ideas amongst peers considerably enriches domain knowledge, blending global and Indian perspectives. The Mumbai Huddle served as the perfect backdrop and met this objective in an informal setting.”

The transformation taking place in corporate boardrooms was another recurring theme. Lloyd Mathias, Independent Director on Multiple Boards, emphasised that directors today are expected to play a far more strategic role than ever before. He said, “The role of corporate boards is undergoing a significant transformation. The focus is shifting from compliance-led oversight to strategic guidance and long-term value creation. Today’s directors are expected not only to ensure strong governance but also to help companies navigate emerging challenges such as AI, cybersecurity, ESG expectations, and global business disruptions.”

Hosting the event at Sorena added a distinctive hospitality experience to the evening. Sumit Govind Sharma, Founder & Director, Monarch Liberty Hospitality, said the response to the concept has been overwhelmingly positive. “The response to Sorena has been incredibly encouraging. Sorena is a celebration of five great cities and the cultures that shape them. The enthusiasm we witnessed reinforces our belief that Mumbai’s cosmopolitan audience is seeking experiences that are thoughtful, immersive and globally inspired,” he added.

The evening concluded with a felicitation ceremony recognising distinguished contributors to the governance ecosystem, followed by networking over cocktails and dinner. As conversations continued beyond the formal sessions, the inaugural Mumbai Huddle successfully delivered on its objective of bringing together leaders committed to strengthening governance, sharing knowledge and shaping the future of board leadership.
