Noel Tata Seeks Shorter Term For Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran Amid Succession Revamp

Noel Tata has proposed a shorter tenure for Natarajan Chandrasekaran as part of a plan to change the leadership structure at Tata Sons. The proposal includes a two-year extension instead of a five-year term and a shift to a system with a Non-Executive Chairman, a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a Managing Director (MD), and a Deputy CEO.

Trustees at Tata Trusts are expected to review the proposal. The board had delayed a decision on extending Chandrasekaran’s tenure at a meeting in February 2026. His current term ends in February 2027. The plan aims to separate roles and define accountability, especially in businesses with high capital use, such as aviation, digital platforms, and electronics. Discussions may begin soon, with a focus on succession planning and leadership transition.

Tata Trusts holds a majority stake in Tata Sons and plays a key role in governance decisions across group companies.
