Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India Proposes Amendment To Spam Call Rules
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India released draft changes titled the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference (Third Amendment) Regulations 2026.
The proposal includes provisions related to the use of artificial intelligence systems to detect unsolicited commercial communications. TRAI said the amendments were prepared after feedback from stakeholders and developments in the telecom sector. Some telecom operators have started using AI systems to identify and block spam calls and messages before they reach subscribers. The rules governing commercial communications were first issued in 2018 and allow users to register preferences to block or allow promotional messages from sectors such as banking or real estate.
TRAI said it has opened a consultation process. Comments can be submitted by April 12, 2026, while counter comments are due by April 27, 2026. The regulator will review responses before issuing final rules.
