Apple & Google Agree To UK App Store Changes After CMA Review

The Competition and Markets Authority said Apple and Google committed to measures to ensure fairer store rankings and reviews, and to safeguard developer data.

The regulator designated both companies as having strategic market status in smartphones in October, giving it powers to require changes. Thousands of developers rely on Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store to distribute apps. Under the commitments, developers will be able to request access to more iOS features to build competing products, including in areas such as digital wallets and live translation. The measures do not address commission fees charged on purchases and subscriptions, which can reach 30%. The CMA said enabling alternative payment methods remains a priority, and discussions continue.

CMA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sarah Cardell said the approach allows faster results while further work proceeds.
