
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon To Retire, John Furner Named Successor
Doug McMillon will retire as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Walmart effective January 31, 2026, after more than ten years in the role.
John Furner, Head of Walmart U.S., will take over as the next CEO.
McMillon became CEO in 2014, overseeing the company’s transformation into a tech-powered, omnichannel retailer. Under his leadership, Walmart invested in employees through higher wages, expanded parental leave, and education programs. He serves on the Boards of the Business Roundtable and the Consumer Goods Forum. He began his Walmart career in 1984 as an hourly associate, working in a warehouse picking orders and unloading trailers. McMillon holds a bachelor’s in accounting from the University of Arkansas and an MBA from the University of Tulsa.
Furner has served as President and CEO of Walmart U.S. since 2019, managing the company’s largest segment with over 4,600 stores. He began his Walmart career in 1993 as an hourly associate and has held leadership roles across merchandising, operations, and sourcing. He has lived and worked in multiple countries and previously served as President and CEO of Sam’s Club U.S. Throughout his career, he has focused on associate development, digital innovation, and operational improvements.
