EU Launches Antitrust Probe Into SAP Software Support Practices

The European Commission has launched an antitrust probe into SAP SE over its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software support services.

The investigation focuses on whether SAP’s policies restrict competition by requiring customers to buy its services, adopt uniform support across products, block cancellation of unused licences, extend initial contracts, and impose high reinstatement fees. EU regulators said these practices could limit rivals and raise costs for European customers. SAP stated its policies follow long-standing industry standards and do not affect financial performance materially. The probe follows similar scrutiny of Microsoft’s bundling practices and comes as SAP expands cloud and generative AI offerings through deals with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services.
