Windsurf Co-Founders Varun Mohan, Douglas Chen & Team To Join Google DeepMind

Google has entered a USD 2.4 billion licensing deal with Windsurf, an AI code generation startup, bringing several of its core team members on Board. The agreement does not involve Google taking equity or control in Windsurf.

Windsurf Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Varun Mohan, Co-Founder Douglas Chen, and select R&D staff will join Google’s DeepMind division to work on agentic coding through the Gemini project. Windsurf investors will receive liquidity via the licence fee and retain equity. Jeff Wang has been named interim CEO, and Graham Moreno will serve as President. Most of Windsurf’s 250 employees will remain with the company to focus on enterprise AI tools.
