Centre Announces Premature Retirement Of SECI’s CMD R.P. Gupta

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has issued an order stating that R.P. Gupta has retired prematurely from the position of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), with effect from May 10, 2025. No reason was mentioned in the official communication.

Gupta is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. He was appointed as CMD of SECI in June 2023 and was scheduled to complete his term next month. His removal comes amid multiple issues at SECI, including delays in signing power purchase agreements for around 12 GW of projects. A foreign corruption case involving power majors has also implicated the corporation. Internal lapses, such as permitting Reliance Power’s bid with disputed bank documents, and regulatory setbacks like the rejection of SECI’s battery energy storage tariff by CERC, have added to operational concerns surrounding the agency.
