Mike Whitaker Steps Down As FAA Administrator Amid Ongoing Aviation Challenges

Michael (Mike) Whitaker, who took over the leadership of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in October 2023, will step down at the end of President Biden’s term, just over a year into his five-year appointment.

Whitaker’s resignation leaves the agency without leadership as it faces significant challenges, including safety concerns and ongoing oversight issues with Boeing. Whitaker’s departure comes amid critical issues in the aviation sector, such as near-collisions and manufacturing problems at Boeing, along with pressure to expedite SpaceX’s regulatory review. Senator Maria Cantwell expressed hope that his successor will continue to prioritise safety within the FAA.
