MCA and Meity demarcate regulatory functions for controlling digital companies
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) announced on 4th July that it will investigate digital market competition issues, whereas the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) will be dealing with sector-specific and technical difficulties. This distinguishes the roles of the two departments of government in terms of controlling online companies including Facebook, Google, and Twitter. The MCA tweeted this following a discussion with Meity officials over the new digital competition law.
The central government established a ‘commission on digital competition legislation’ (CDCL) earlier this year to write a law managing rivalry in the digital ecosystem as a whole. According to a Meity official, certain stakeholders were concerned regarding the overlapping of duties across different ministries when it comes to regulating digital enterprises.
