Top Indian Companies hire Very Few People With Disabilities
When it comes to creating an inclusive work environment top corporates struggle to move beyond gender diversity. A report by The Economic Times, reveals that India’s top corporations have failed to achieve substantial representation of Persons With Disabilities (PwDs) in their workforce. While there is a growing commitment among companies to embrace affirmative action. The data from Nifty 50 constituent companies’ annual disclosures indicate a mere three PwDs for every 1,000 employees. Among these companies, only five have managed to surpass a 1% representation of PwDs on their rolls. Public Sector Companies lead the way, adhering to the mandate of reserving 4% of jobs for PwDs as stipulated by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
PSCs, however, grapple with distinct challenges. The PwD candidate pool is limited, and historical legacy issues, which led to scant PwD representation in the past, hinder immediate compliance with the quota. Moreover, the nature of job roles offered by different companies influences the opportunities available for PwDs. Companies with predominantly desk-based jobs appear more accessible for PwDs than those focused on on-ground, project-based work.
However, there is a silver lining on the horizon. According to the Foundit insights tracker for July 2023, diversity hiring, targeting women, PwDs, and LGBTQIA+ candidates, has surged by 26%.
Experts assert that the dividends of an inclusive workforce are ample – PwD employees are renowned for their dedication, diligence, and loyalty, while their attrition rates tend to be lower. Despite the challenges, the corporate sector’s endeavours towards inclusivity are gradually gaining momentum, marking a positive step towards a more diverse and equitable workforce.
