OpenAI CEO Urges Global Cooperation for AI Regulation
During his visit to South Korea, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, advocated for global collaboration in regulating generative artificial intelligence.
Altman emphasized the need for global cooperation as AI systems become increasingly powerful and their impact expands globally. He joins a growing number of experts who have warned about the risks associated with AI and advocated for prioritizing mitigation efforts on a global scale.
Altman expressed concerns about the speed at which AI advancements are taking place, highlighting the potential challenges that arise when technological revolutions unfold rapidly. He acknowledged that historical technological changes have generally been adapted over two generations, but if such changes occur within a span of just ten years, it presents a new set of challenges.
Governments worldwide are facing pressure to regulate AI. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol stressed the importance of international standards to address potential side effects related to AI platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. In a meeting held last month, officials from the United States and Europe came together to discuss the oversight of AI and made a commitment to develop voluntary codes of conduct.
China is also taking steps towards AI regulation, as indicated by Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI.
Altman has been on an international tour, visiting Israel, the United Arab Emirates, India, and South Korea, to engage with global leaders and explore AI-related opportunities and challenges.
