EU Parliament Approves Eased CO₂ Emission Rules For Carmakers
European automakers will now be able to average their CO₂ emissions across the period 2025–2027 rather than being assessed only in 2025, following a vote by the European Parliament.
The rule change, passed by 458 votes to 101 with 14 abstentions, aims to ease compliance pressure and mitigate potential fines that industry groups had estimated could reach up to 15 billion euros. The European Commission, after lobbying from automakers, proposed the adjustment to support manufacturers still expanding electric vehicle production. Volkswagen stated the 2025 burden remains despite the new timeline. Critics argue that the industry has had sufficient lead time to prepare and question the fine projections.
The policy awaits formal adoption by the European Council before it takes effect.
